Position Overview – Disability Support Worker (Level 2)
The Level 2 DSW delivers high-quality, person-centred support to participants in line with their individualised support plans, organisational policies, and NDIS Practice Standards.
This role provides skilled and responsive support, including working with participants who may have more complex needs, while exercising greater judgement and initiative within established frameworks.
The Level 2 DSW contributes to positive participant outcomes through consistent support delivery, proactive problem-solving, effective communication, and collaboration with the broader support team.
Scope of Role
The Level 2 DSW provides frontline supports across the following areas:
Direct Support and Daily Living Assistance

Provide high-quality support with activities of daily living (ADLs), including personal care, hygiene, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mealtime assistance.

Adapt support approaches to meet individual participant needs while maintaining consistency with support plans.

Support participants with mobility and transfers in accordance with training and safe work practices.
-
Respond to participant needs in a flexible and person-centred manner within established frameworks.
Emotional Wellbeing and Participant Engagement
-
Build strong, professional relationships with participants.
-
Provide emotional support and respond appropriately to changes in participant presentation.
-
Apply effective communication and de-escalation techniques where required.
-
Maintain professional boundaries while managing more complex interpersonal dynamics.
Community Participation and Social Inclusion
-
Support participants to access and engage in community-based activities.
-
Facilitate participation in social, recreational, and meaningful activities aligned with participant goals.
-
Support increased independence and confidence in community settings.
-
Assist participants to navigate community environments safely and effectively.
Skill Development and Capacity Building
-
Support participants in developing and maintaining everyday life skills.
-
Implement and reinforce structured skill-building strategies from support plans.
-
Adjust support approaches (within scope) to maximise participant engagement and outcomes.

Provide feedback on participant progress and contribute to continuous improvement of support strategies.
Health Monitoring, Safety, and Risk Awareness
-
Monitor participant wellbeing and identify changes in health, behaviour, or emotional state.
-
Respond appropriately to emerging risks using judgement within established procedures.

Implement and follow risk management and behaviour support strategies as directed.
-
Escalate complex or high-risk situations while taking initial appropriate action to ensure safety.
Documentation and Reporting
-
Complete accurate, objective, and timely progress notes.
-
Record incidents, hazards, and observations in accordance with organisational requirements.

Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
-
Ensure documentation meets NDIS Practice Standards and organisational requirements.

Provide clear and relevant information to support continuity of care.
Advocacy, Rights, and Safeguarding
-
Uphold the rights, dignity, and autonomy of all participants.
-
Support participants to exercise choice and control in a safe and informed manner.
-
Act in accordance with the NDIS Code of Conduct and safeguarding requirements.
-
Identify and report any concerns related to participant safety, wellbeing, or rights.
Key Work Boundaries (Level 2 Classification)
The Level 2 DSW:
-
Delivers supports in accordance with established care plans while exercising judgement within defined frameworks.
-
Works with increased autonomy while remaining accountable to organisational direction and support plan requirements.
-
May adapt support approaches in response to participant needs within the scope of support plans.
-
Supports participants with more complex needs, including behaviours of concern (as directed).
-
Applies problem-solving skills to respond to routine challenges in service delivery.
-
Escalates complex, high-risk, or outside-scope situations to senior staff.
-
Does not independently develop formal support plans or behaviour support strategies.
-
Does not hold formal supervisory or managerial responsibility (unless separately appointed).
-
May provide informal guidance or support to less experienced staff (without formal supervisory responsibility).

Key Selection Criteria

Demonstrated experience in disability support, including working with a range of participant needs.

Strong understanding of person-centred support and ability to apply it in practice.

Ability to exercise judgement within established frameworks.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
-
Ability to respond to challenges and adapt support approaches appropriately.
-
Awareness of safety, risk management, and incident response practices.
-
Commitment to respectful, inclusive, and professional practice.
Skills and Qualifications – Required
-
Certificate III or IV in Disability (or equivalent)
-
Current First Aid (3 years) and CPR (12 months).
-
NDIS Worker Screening Check (valid).
-
National Police Check.
-
Working With Children Check (WWCC).
Skills and Qualifications – Desirable
-
Current Driver’s Licence.
-
Manual handling training.
-
Medication training (if required by role).
-
Experience supporting participants with complex needs.
-
Behaviour support awareness or experience.
-
Ongoing professional development engagement.
Working Outside Scope of Role
-
DSWs must operate within their defined scope. Working outside scope may:

Compromise participant safety.
-
Create legal and compliance risks.
-
Reduce quality and consistency of care.
-
Breach professional boundaries.
-
All tasks outside scope must be escalated to a supervisor.
